CULTURE NEWS

  • The Sunflower Film Festival—created by Jason to honor his late wife India Deibler-Love—will feature films, live panels, and music on Friday at the Lucky Wolf to raise mental health awareness in the community.  WWMT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A strong storm system has raised the chances for severe thunderstorms later today—communities such as Kalamazoo, Ann Arbor, Jackson, Lansing and Battle Creek face possible tornadoes with a five percent risk, damaging winds and hail. NOAA forecasters advise residents to stay alert as the system moves through southern Lower Michigan.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kalamazoo city commissioners interviewed three executive search firms on Monday to help with the city manager search and delayed choosing a winner for a week to allow public comment—ensuring community input at the special meeting scheduled next Monday at 7 p.m. Each firm offered similar services and pricing but varied in local experience and diversity hiring, which guided the commission's careful review.  WKZO
  • A set of bills introduced by Rep. Sarah Anthony is heading to the Michigan State Senate to give renters more rights and set strict deadlines for landlords to fix hazards, mold, and pests while requiring a 90-day notice for rent increases — local housing groups worry that these measures may reduce available rental homes.  WWMT
  • Kalamazoo officials approved an agreement with CD Arena LLC on June 16, 2024 to split a $13.1 million bill for stormwater, wastewater, water and street work around the incoming Kalamazoo Event Center— the city and arena developer will share the cost as they update downtown infrastructure.  MLive
  • Sprinkle Road north of Kilgore Road is closed for railroad crossing work that began Tuesday, June 17 & will end Tuesday, June 24. Drivers must follow detours to Covington Road, Kilgore Road & back to Sprinkle Road as no vehicles can cross the tracks.  MLive

  • Major League Baseball and Derek Jeter’s Turn 2 Foundation are hosting a PLAY BALL event at Kalamazoo Central High School today at 11 a.m.—about 150 local kids will join in baseball and softball activities while each participant receives a free bat and ball set and a commemorative T-shirt.  WKZO
