COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Multiple community events are planned across West Michigan this Father's Day weekend, with a protest in Kalamazoo from 12 to 2 p.m. on South Drake Road and the Kalamazoo Klassic race starting today following packet pickup on Friday evening. Additional events include a Juneteenth Celebration at Bronson Park, Kids in the Zoo at Kalamazoo Mall, South Haven HarborFest, Vicksburg Old Car Fest, Rock the Block in Grand Rapids and Allegan Bridge Fest + other local festivities.  WWMT

CRIME NEWS

  • Investigators with KVET executed three search warrants in different Kalamazoo locations on June 13 — arresting a 33-year-old man on Stadium Drive and a 40-year-old on Florence Street while seizing crack cocaine and cash linked to drug sales — and the suspects are now held in county jail.  WWMT
  • A woman shot on Woodward Avenue in Kalamazoo on June 12 was identified as Sariah Robinson — officers said she suffered fatal gunshot wounds at 2:09 p.m. and that a 55-year-old suspect known to her shot himself on Lilac Lane when police tried to contact him.  WWMT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kalamazoo College officials broke ground on a new $55 million residential facility for up to 218 juniors and seniors that will open in fall. The ceremony on Thursday was attended by faculty, staff & community leaders including Mayor David Anderson, and part of the funding came from a $30 million anonymous gift.  WKZO
  • Kalamazoo Public Schools must submit a budget proposal for next school year by the end of this month—Finance Director Laura Kayser says the district faces uncertainty as state funding remains unapproved and declining enrollment may lead to staffing cuts. The school board will vote on the proposal a week after Monday as officials wait for more accurate financial data.  WKZO

  • Today nearly 2,000 'No Kings' protests are scheduled worldwide—13 set in West Michigan as demonstrators in Kalamazoo rally against federal policies like Social Security cuts and immigration raids. Local organizers say the events will remain peaceful—police and trained peacekeepers are ready to ensure public safety.  WWMT
  • Kalamazoo County is offering $400,000 in community grants for local groups to help residents with urgent needs; applications opened June 13 at 8 a.m. & proposals must be submitted by July 18 for programs starting January 1 while county commissioners will review applications in November when next year's budget is set.  WKZO
