COMMUNITY NEWS

  • After a year of delay caused by a legal dispute with Texas Township over tree screening, Pine Island Chapel opened in Texas Township at 8882 West Q Ave. The 1,900-square-foot chapel cost $500,000 from fundraising and now hosts services, funerals, and Bible study meetings—serving as a new venue for the church.  MLive

CRIME NEWS

  • Jerry Harvey left his palm print in his cousin's blood at 1210 E. Main—evidence that led to him being bound over for trial on June 11 for open murder and felony firearm charges following the fatal shooting on Jan. 23.  MLive
  • Kalamazoo Public Safety is investigating a non-deadly shooting on Tuesday night near North Park Street on Drexel Place that left a victim with injuries — no suspect has been described.  WKZO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A new education budget plan approved by the House committee yesterday cuts direct funding from public colleges such as the University of Michigan and Michigan State University—dropping per-student funds by over 70% and reducing state aid by $828 million from last year. The plan, proposed by Rep. Greg Markkanen, also offers a $5,500 scholarship for Michigan high school graduates who choose in-state schools—while it withholds DEI funding until schools follow state rules.  WWMT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeff Getting urged protestors to keep their protests peaceful when joining demonstrations scheduled for Saturday in Kalamazoo, South Haven, Paw Paw, and Battle Creek in response to ICE raids and federal cuts—he warned that violent actions could lead to charges ranging from civil infractions to up to 10 years in prison.  WWMT
  • A 175-year-old dam on Sunset Lake near downtown Vicksburg has deteriorated and will be replaced with a new design to meet state flood safety rules; a $3.4M grant from ARPA and EGLE will fund demolition and reconstruction, and plans are underway though a timeline has not yet been set—officials stress the project is urgent.  MLive

  • Kalamazoo Country Club will add two new golf courses and expand its green space by 30 percent from 83,000 to 117,000 square feet—an eleven hole short course will open by spring 2026. Construction on an eighteen hole championship quality course will begin in August and is planned to open by spring 2027.  WWMT
