ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire broke out in a house on Dupont Avenue in Kalamazoo Township Tuesday morning—fire started in an upstairs bedroom and multiple fire departments responded as officials reported the blaze was put out before reporters arrived.  WWMT

CRIME NEWS

  • A Kalamazoo man, 20-year-old Khymarus Pratt, was sentenced to 25 to 60 years in prison on Monday after pleading guilty to felony murder and firearm charges for killing 25-year-old Bader Farwana during an attempted robbery on March 23rd, 2024—Kalamazoo officers said Farwana was found with fatal gunshot wounds in his vehicle.  WKZO
  • Liborio Rogelio Valdez II was sentenced on June 10 to decades in prison for manslaughter and armed robbery—charges for the April 4 shooting of 24-year-old Kavonta Terreal Martin at Westchester Woods Apartments on Little Drive—as his actions during an attempted robbery ended Martin’s life.  WWMT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Lunchtime Live! will start at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, June 13 in Bronson Park with live music, food trucks, and vendors. The free two-hour event will run weekly through Aug. 29 except July 4 and feature a new regional act each week—plus a youth talent show and entrepreneurship fair on Aug. 15.  MLive
  • Kalamazoo rapper LIPSEY works 12-hour shifts at a packaging plant while recording a new track 'Chandelier' for his upcoming fifth album later this summer—his rising career has gained attention from major artists and he will perform at a family-friendly show on June 14.  MLive
  • Railroad Earth will perform a two-set show at Bell's Beer Garden this Friday, June 13 at 8 p.m. with doors opening at 7 p.m.+ Tickets cost $40+ fees as the band returns to the venue after its 2023 performance.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kalamazoo County’s Road Commission received $25M from the federal Safe Streets and Roads for All program to remove trees, add rumble strips, and widen shoulders on over 130 miles of dangerous roads like West Q Avenue—efforts aimed at reducing fatal and serious accidents. The five-year plan will begin later this year and will not impact roads managed by Kalamazoo or Portage.  WWMT
