CRIME NEWS

  • A Kalamazoo County judge sentenced 33-year-old George Stanard to 17 to 40 years in prison for setting multiple fires during summer 2024 that injured first responders and displaced residents (he pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree arson and one count of third-degree arson as a second-habitual offender).  WWMT
  • A 20-year-old man was arrested by Kalamazoo Public Safety and the Kalamazoo Valley Enforcement Team after a search warrant on the 100 block of East Bush Street on Sunday led to the seizure of crack cocaine + several firearms.  WKZO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The city of Kalamazoo hired David Marquardt as deputy city manager. He will start working on July 7 — after serving as Grand Rapids Parks and Recreation director since 2015 — and will manage parks, recreation, public services and communication projects.  WKZO
  • City officials announced a half-mile stretch of Westnedge Avenue between Vine Street and Michigan Avenue will be repaved with lane closures starting Monday, June 16 while keeping access to all homes and businesses. The resurfacing project—an $860,000 effort that will update traffic signals, repair sidewalks and repaint a bike lane—will be completed by mid-August.  MLive
  • Downtown Kalamazoo will move into the second phase of its parking system revamp as new parking stations taking charge cards and updated meters replace old ones—pricing will be adjusted with higher rates in busy areas and lower rates along East Michigan Avenue. Public forums will start next month with installations scheduled to begin this October.  WKZO

HEALTH NEWS

  • June is Elder Abuse Awareness Month and officials with the Kalamazoo Area Agency on Aging say one in ten seniors have suffered abuse such as physical harm, financial exploitation, or neglect—fewer than one in four cases are reported. They urge caregivers and family members to know the warning signs and report any concerns to help protect our older residents.  WKZO
