- ➤ Discover Kalamazoo has proposed a $40 million indoor youth sports facility in the Westwood neighborhood between Drake Road and 131—designed to include one indoor turf field and eight basketball courts convertible to 16 volleyball courts for local play and tournaments. Approved by a 12—1 vote on May 29, the site will be presented to the county board on June 17 before site preparation begins by year's end and a groundbreaking is set for spring 2026, with funding from a 4% hotel assessment that does not add taxes on county residents. - ➤ A murder trial in Kalamazoo ended in a mistrial when the jury did not reach a verdict on charges against Jason Lawrence Blough for fatally stabbing 62-year-old Eddie Contreras near a homeless camp on East Crosstown Parkway and South Pitcher Street — officials said the case may be refiled. MLive
- ➤ A 20-year-old Jenison man was arraigned on Thursday, June 5 at Hudsonville District Court on a felony charge after he allegedly fired a gun from an upstairs bedroom at a Tallmadge Township home during a May 9 party—19-year-old Grand Valley State University student Connor Lotterman was struck in the head and later died. - ➤ Kalamazoo is kicking off summer with JumpstART Weekend today by hosting the 74th Annual Kalamazoo Institute of Arts Fair in Bronson Park that will draw about 15,000 visitors and feature over 130 artists. The two-day event offers live entertainment, shopping, kids' activities, artist demonstrations, and food trucks—along with Art on the Mall, Kalamazoo Pride today and the Do Dah Parade tomorrow—designed to engage the community. - ➤ Kalamazoo officials announced that Westnedge Avenue will be repaved from Vine Street to Michigan Avenue beginning June 16—traffic for nearby homes and businesses will remain open. The project includes roadway milling, sidewalk repairs, ADA ramp upgrades, and other improvements at a cost of $860,623 and is expected to finish by mid-August. WWMT
