CRIME NEWS

  • Emmett Township public safety officers arrested a suspect (whose name was not released) after finding two improvised explosive devices in a mobile home on East Columbia Avenue near Main Street (and seizing several firearms linked to criminal activity).  WKZO

ECONOMY NEWS

  • PlazaCorp is leading a $100 million investment to redevelop three downtown sites in Kalamazoo—transforming the Spearflex office building into 57 new residential units, converting a rundown factory on 619 Porter Street into mixed-use space, and turning the historic county courthouse into a hotel with 127 rooms, restaurants, and onsite parking. Project plans will seek approval later this year and are expected to finish by 2031.  WWMT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City commissioners approved a new Portland Loo — a 24/7 public restroom — for downtown Kalamazoo. The facility will be built over nine months with parts arriving by Oct. 6 while temporary portable toilets are set up from June 6 to November to track use.  MLive
  • State lawmakers held a press conference Tuesday to warn about rising antisemitism after a violent hate crime in Boulder, Colorado injured eight people when Molotov cocktails were thrown— they plan to introduce the Michigan Antisemitism Protection Act to help authorities track discrimination against Jews.  WWMT
  • Kalamazoo city leaders presented plans at a City Commission meeting to replace old parking meters with new ones and introduce tiered pricing—this change will add more barrier-free spaces and simplify downtown payment options. Installation is set for October and a test period will follow to ensure the system meets residents' needs.  WWMT

  • Kalamazoo-area sports fans are invited to vote for the spring Athlete of the Week from a field of 45 candidates including baseball, softball, track and more—voting runs until 9 a.m. on Friday, June 6.
