CRIME NEWS

  • Kalamazoo police arrested a suspect in a fatal shooting on May 28 near Riverview Drive and East Paterson Street—police said a 42-year-old man died from gunshot wounds and the suspect’s name was to be released after his arraignment on June 2.  MLive
  • Kalamazoo police arrested one person after a fatal shooting near Riverview Drive and East Paterson Street that killed a 42-year-old man — they will release identifying details on Tuesday after the suspect is arraigned.  WWMT
  • A Kalamazoo man pleaded no contest to a charge of second degree murder for strangling 68 year old Minette Weaver at her apartment on Douglas Ave in November 2024—her caregiver found her body the next day amid signs of a violent attack.  MLive
  • Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officers arrested a suspect in a murder that happened Wednesday when a 42-year-old man was shot near Riverview Drive and East Paterson Street; his name remains unreleased as he is set to be arraigned today.  WKZO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Teacher Betsy Springer at Gull Lake Virtual Partnership in Kalamazoo County offers Adulting 101 and Adulting 102 classes where high school students learn life skills such as choosing insurance, writing a resume and budgeting. She developed the courses after finding a Facebook meme and now adjusts lessons based on student and parent feedback.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City commissioners will review nine executive search firms for the new city manager tonight in Kalamazoo after a subcommittee ranked bids from firms in Texas, Ohio and California — while some members suggested that the Human Services Department handle the search. Current city manager Jim Ritsema will retire mid-November.  WKZO

SPORTS NEWS

  • Seven Kalamazoo-area baseball teams won district championships on Saturday — including Mattawan, Gull Lake, Three Rivers, Kalamazoo Christian, Centreville, Decatur and White Pigeon, and each advanced to next week’s regional tournaments.  MLive
  • Five girls soccer teams from Mattawan, Otsego, Three Rivers, Allegan, and Kalamazoo Christian won district titles over the weekend and will play in regional semifinals today.  MLive
  • Cassidy Parmelee—a Division-I commit—scored an overtime game-winning goal that gave Mattawan its first district title in 24 years with a 3—2 win over Battle Creek Lakeview. The Wildcats will face Midland in a Division I regional semifinal today.  MLive
