CULTURE NEWS

  • The Kalamazoo Institute of Arts fair returns June 5-6 in Bronson Park with 145 artists showing work in 12 mediums plus live music and artist demos; visitors may vote for the new People’s Choice Award on Friday. This free event celebrates local art and community.  MLive
  • The Do-Dah Parade returns with a Disney/Pixar theme in downtown Kalamazoo at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 6, after concerns over rising costs nearly ended the beloved event; new grants + lower city fees have made its comeback possible.  MLive

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Michigan gas prices fell to $4.35 per gallon on Monday, June 1, with Menominee at $3.98 and Mackinac at $4.91, though experts warn (despite optimism over a U.S.-Iran deal) that rising tensions could soon push prices higher during the summer travel season.  MLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • Rx Kids expanded into three Kalamazoo County communities on Monday, including Galesburg, Oshtemo Township and Wakeshma Township. The program provides expecting mothers with $1,500 during pregnancy and $500 monthly after birth, with nearly 94% of eligible families enrolled to ease financial stress and boost infant health.  WWMT

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Commissioners will be asked Tuesday to revise the grant to accept developer Jamauri Bogan’s revised Phase 2 plan at Frank and Pitcher adding 38 additional units, while the board also considers a tax break for a Galesburg housing project proposing 52 new homes set to break ground this summer.  WKZO

SPORTS NEWS

  • Six local softball teams, including +Portage Central, Paw Paw, Vicksburg, Gobles, Kalamazoo Christian, and Bronson+, won district titles over the weekend and will advance to regional semifinals beginning June 6 at local fields. Their wins show strong local athletic talent.  MLive
  • Between May 28 and May 30, six local girls soccer teams clinched district championships when Portage Central won 4 to 1 and Gull Lake secured an overtime victory plus all champs will play in regional semifinals on June 2.  MLive
  • Ten local baseball teams won district championships over the weekend, with wins from Mattawan, Otsego, Vicksburg, Schoolcraft, Martin and Kalamazoo Hackett. Several teams will face regional semifinals on Wednesday at different venues in the area.  MLive
  • Jack Cook of Otsego set a new Division 2 state meet record (21.24) in the 200-meter dash Saturday, and three throwers from Vicksburg, Otsego and Climax-Scotts also won state titles at their events. Kalamazoo-area athletes earned all-state honors for top finishes over the weekend.  MLive
  • Gull Lake junior Lane Isom scored the overtime game-winning goal on Friday, May 8 at Portage Central High School and then won the 800-meter state track title 12 hours later, leading her team to a district championship. Her dual-sport achievements marked a remarkable day in high school sports.  MLive
  • Junior Clara Slattery led Kalamazoo Hackett’s girls track team to its first state championship on Saturday by winning the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles, and 200 dash. The team finished with 44 points, beating Fowler (37) and Hudson (43) in a historic meet.  MLive
