- ➤ On May 29, six local food banks received nearly 29,000 pounds of nonperishable food donated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints—volunteers delivered the food to pantries serving families facing food insecurity. WWMT
- ➤ Motorcyclists and bicyclists gathered at Mt. Zion Baptist Church on May 31 for the 11th annual Bikers' Blessing event that promoted road safety as summer neared. The day featured a three-mile bike ride, a police escorted rally from Battle Creek Harley Davidson, live music, a stunt show, bounce house, vendors and safety talks — all showing the community’s growing interest in cycling. - ➤ The second annual Edison Neighborhood Picnic and Bike Parade was held on May 31 at Southside Park in Kalamazoo as the Edison Neighborhood Association revived an 1980s tradition with food, bike decorating stations, and a bike giveaway. The event ended with a parade for all ages (with the Open Roads Bike Program on site for minor bike repairs). WWMT

- ➤ Over the Memorial Day weekend, KDPS and KVET conducted targeted operations in Kalamazoo—resulting in six seized firearms and multiple arrests of suspects charged with armed robbery, drug offenses and illegally carrying weapons, including one who threw a firearm from his car during a traffic stop. - ➤ Kalamazoo Public Schools held graduation ceremonies last week at Kalamazoo Central and Loy Norrix — a record 350 graduates — and Superintendent Darrin Slade said improved culture helped the district reach this milestone. Classes for the remaining students in the 2024–2025 school year will end Friday, June 6. WKZO

- ➤ NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center has issued a geomagnetic storm watch for June 1st—2nd following a solar flare and CME from the sun, and the charged particles will reach Earth Sunday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. EDT—potentially giving residents a chance to see northern lights after sunset if wildfire smoke does not interfere. - ➤ The Michigan Attorney General's Office is tracking toll scam texts that claim unpaid toll fees and have sparked about one in seven calls, and officials are working with MDOT to warn residents that the messages are fake — they stress not to give personal or payment details when links do not show official contact information. - ➤ City Commissioners appointed Sarah Joshi as Parchment's new city manager, effective June 18, replacing Nancy Stoddard who led the city since 2017 — Joshi brings a strong background in planning and public administration from her work in Kalamazoo County and Portage. MLive
- ➤ Kalamazoo County planners in May reviewed seven projects including an 80-unit apartment near Bronson Methodist Hospital, park improvements at Verburg, mixed-use zoning changes in Portage, a new furniture store in Oshtemo Township, a backyard sports instruction business, a new road in Texas Township, and a breakfast spot with housing upstairs.
