COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Registration is open for the 47th annual Kalamazoo Klassic where runners can choose a 5K, 10K, or a combined event on June 14 to support MRC Industries’ mission for adults with disabilities. Proceeds will fund a program that helps clients build work skills and earn income by selling their handmade art—runners can also secure a t-shirt if they register by June 1. WWMT
- ➤ The 47th annual Kalamazoo Klassic is open for registration for 5K, 10K or combined races on June 14—proceeds will support MRC Industries’ work at an art studio in the Kalamazoo Mall that helps adults with disabilities. Runners who register by June 1 will receive a t-shirt designed by one of the studio’s artists. WWMT
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Kalamazoo law enforcement is searching for a driver who crashed into a senior apartment on Mount Olivet Road at 9:14 p.m. on May 27 and fled the scene—no injuries were reported. WWMT
- ➤ Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller said that on May 12, seven inmates were trapped in a transport van for two hours after breaking a window to escape and that his office is investigating the incident thoroughly—he confirmed that all inmates have returned to jail, showered and received clean uniforms and fluids. WWMT
- ➤ Two Kalamazoo County men were sentenced to federal prison for selling fentanyl that caused at least seven deaths and many poisonings in April 2023—James Smith received 20 years for conspiracy to distribute controlled substances resulting in death and Patrick Donald Martin received four years for using a communication facility to help commit the crime. - ➤ Portage Public Schools announced that Johnny Edwards, an in-house candidate, was named superintendent on May 28; he will replace retiring Mark Bielang and start his new role on July 1 (Edwards has served as assistant superintendent since 2021). WWMT
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Health officials in Kalamazoo County resumed annual water quality testing at nine public bathing beaches on May 29. They collect samples between Memorial Day and Labor Day and will issue advisories (if bacteria levels exceed state limits) to keep beachgoers safe. WWMT
