COMMUNITY NEWS

  • CHC's 27th annual Roof Sit is underway in Portage with a kick-off dinner at the corner of South Westnedge and Milham Avenue to raise funds for children affected by abuse and neglect. The event will continue through noon on Saturday—donations will help pay for free to low-cost services as 13 cases of abuse and neglect are reported every day in Kalamazoo County.  WWMT

CRIME NEWS

  • On May 22, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Michigan discovered part of their HVAC unit was stolen from a locked concrete area—police have filed a report and the group estimates a $5,000 replacement with a new unit expected by late June.  WWMT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Comstock Township's superintendent Scott Hess received a $20,000 raise on April 28 after a 4 to 2 board vote—his annual salary rising from $83,500 to $134,974. Some board members supported the increase for his dedication while others questioned if his office duties justified the higher pay—sparking local debate over the compensation.  MLive
