- ➤ Kenneth Leonard has been named board president of Kalamazoo Valley Habitat for Humanity—he will lead the organization drawing on 8 years of board service and a strong background in commercial banking and volunteer work. WKZO
- ➤ On Thursday night, strong storms knocked down trees and left hundreds without power at the SPCA of Southwest MI, but Executive Director Katie Timber used a YouTube tutorial to restart the generator—saving thousands of dollars in vaccines and medicines. The power company warned that full restoration may not come until Friday, and about 40 spay and neuter surgeries were canceled for safety. WWMT

- ➤ On May 15, a storm uprooted trees and damaged several homes in the Fairgrove neighborhood in Oshtemo Township—houses became unlivable and nearly 48,000 customers lost power, with Consumers Energy saying power will be restored by 7:30 p.m. today. MLive
- ➤ No one was hurt when a house on North 33rd Street in Comstock Township caught fire Friday morning (May 16) and firefighters quickly knocked down the blaze while Kalamazoo Township and Pavilion Township fire departments assisted. WWMT
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A 24-year-old Kalamazoo man was shot multiple times during a fight on Friday morning at 9 a.m. on Hays Park Avenue between Race Street and James Street and is in critical but stable condition—police are searching for a suspect described as a Black man in his early 20s with dreadlocked hair—and two other men, 18 and 29, have been arrested and taken to jail. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The National Weather Service is sending crews to parts of west Michigan to investigate possible tornadoes that hit last night. Nearly 200,000 Consumers Energy customers lost power and damage was reported in Allegan County, Portage, and downtown Kalamazoo — with the Comerica Building suffering torn paneling and insulation. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The city of Kalamazoo bought the old Brite Eyes Brewing site on South Burdick Street and the nearby parking lot to expand its water pumping field near the Central Water Treatment plant (the purchase cost was $335,000). City commissioners approved the deal on Monday and work will begin in 2028 to demolish the business and install new underground infrastructure. WKZO
- ➤ Congressman Bill Huizenga announced millions in federal block grants to fund affordable housing projects and harbor dredging improvements in West Michigan. Kalamazoo will receive over $2 million for community development while Holland is set to get more than $20 million for dredging—federal and local agencies will work together to complete these projects.
