ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ On May 13, 1980, an F3 tornado traveled 11 miles from the west side of Kalamazoo through downtown to near Comstock with winds of 158—206 mph, killing 5 and injuring 79. WWMT
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Kalamazoo police said mobile nuisance parties known as X-trains have returned and now use rental cars—17% of the 129 vehicles recorded since April—to try to avoid arrest, and a new city ordinance passed Monday lets officers tow cars immediately while violating drivers face up to 90 days in jail and fees of up to $500. - ➤ George Stanard pleaded guilty Monday, May 12 to setting buildings on fire on Allen Boulevard in Kalamazoo—his plea follows a multi-house fire that occurred on June 11, 2024. WWMT
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Kalamazoo City Commission approved buying the former Brite Eyes Brewing site at 1156 S. Burdick St.—a property in a flood-prone area—on May 12 for $335,000 so the city can demolish the building and remove the parking lot to expand its water treatment plant; major improvements are planned for 2026 and 2028. - ➤ Kalamazoo Utilities Director James Baker said a one-year delay in converting Kalamazoo Avenue means fewer orange cones will appear downtown — cones will still be present as construction continues. Crews will close Westnedge Avenue from late June to next June and detour southbound traffic down Michi-Kal to Michigan Avenue — they will install large water mains, replace century-old pipes, work on Arcadia Creek, and limit access for the Catholic Diocese to Michigan Avenue.
