- ➤ Sarkozy Bakery supports its community by donating unsold pastries daily and maintaining a 32-hour workweek to boost staff well-being; the bakery, established in 1978 and located at 350 E. Michigan Ave (a neighborhood staple), operates seven days a week. MLive
- ➤ Kalamazoo in Bloom invites residents to help create vibrant flower displays honoring America’s 250th anniversary in downtown areas. Volunteers are needed on May 20 and May 22 and all supplies are provided (gardening experience is not required). WWMT
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Students at Van Buren Tech in Lawrence participated in a mock disaster exercise on Tuesday to test emergency response skills with local agencies + emergency experts. They faced simulated fires and injuries to apply their training in a realistic setting. WWMT
- ➤ Dedrick Martin, KRESA superintendent, won the Michigan Association of Superintendents and Administrators Region VII Superintendent of the Year award on May 1. He led the opening of the KRESA Career Connect Campus serving 1,400 students and secured a special education millage renewal to support essential services. MLive
- ➤ Comstock Public Schools is set to redraw its $23.7-million bond request after the measure failed last week, with plans for roof and air conditioning upgrades. Superintendent Dr. Jeff Thoenes said a facilities committee will meet soon to explore options, including a state grant (or loan) if voters continue to say no. WKZO
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On Tuesday, May 12, teams from FEMA, the Michigan State Police and the SBA went door-to-door in Kalamazoo and other counties to assess storm and flood damage—data that will help decide if Governor Whitmer requests a federal disaster declaration. WWMT
- ➤ City officials have approved changes to downtown parking, including a free first 30 minutes through fall (2027), increased maximum time to 3 hours, and enforcement ending at 5 p.m. Updated signage and maps will be introduced in early June as the plan is implemented. WWMT
- ➤ Portage officials announced that Schuring Road from Oakland Drive to South Westnedge is closed from 8 a.m. Wednesday until 5 p.m. Friday to install water service in the 1800 block - drivers should follow the detour route via Oakland Drive, Romence Road and South Westnedge Avenue, weather permitting.
