- ➤ Cardinal Robert Prevost became Pope Leo XIV after years of serving local churches and building ties in Niles, where he offered Spanish Masses and baptized children. Local church leaders hope his American roots & bilingual skills will help bridge communities and promote unity. WWMT
- ➤ Frankie, a 3-year-old dog at the SPCA of Southwest Michigan, is seeking his forever home, and SPCA Executive Director Katie Timber said he is fixed, vaccinated, and makes a good companion for children. She noted he is a bit shy and sheds a lot – potential adopters should be ready for extra care. WWMT
- ➤ Residents of Colony Woods in Texas Township celebrated one year since an EF2 tornado caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage on May 10 with free food, ice cream & community activities that showed their recovery progress. Joanne O'Rourke, the neighborhood association president, said much work remains as the community rebuilds together. WWMT
- ➤ One year ago, a 135 mph EF2 tornado hit Portage on May 7, 2024, damaging 60 buildings, 48,000 trees, and injuring 12 people. Community leaders and emergency managers continue repair work and support local recovery efforts — donations are helping restore the lost tree canopy. MLive
- ➤ Nearly 200 local kids attended the baseball season opening at the Dickinson Sports Complex on May 10th, where they learned hitting, throwing, catching, and baserunning. - ➤ Michigan State Police say 14-year-old Caidee Yarbro went missing after leaving Marshall Middle School on Friday evening; friends last saw her at 5 p.m. on Snapchat in the Albion area while she wore a black Marshall Cheer sweatshirt, black leggings and black crocs (any information should be shared by calling 269-558-0500). - ➤ Gardening experts say seeds that need cool soil and water, like peas, spinach, lettuce, beets, carrots, radishes, turnips and collards, can be planted today through Tuesday, while beans and sweet corn will be planted Wednesday when soil warms to 60 degrees—warm-season crops such as zucchini, cucumbers and melons must wait until Memorial Day weekend.
