- ➤ After closing this winter when the iconic newsstand lost owner Dean Hauck at age 86, it reopened May 2 for a memorial that gathered over 100 locals — her daughters said a new business with the same values will soon take its place. - ➤ The Portage Public Schools board of trustees will interview four superintendent finalists next week (May 14: Scott Warstler at 5:00 p.m. and Matt Olson at 6:30 p.m.; May 15: Eric Alburtus at 4:30 p.m. and Johnny Edwards at 6:00 p.m.) at Portage Central High School (8135 South Westnedge). They plan to name a new superintendent by July 1 as current leader Mark Bielang retires at the end of the school year. WKZO
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The W.E. Upjohn Institute updated its study to show that Kalamazoo County now needs 8,000 new homes by 2030 to address a growing gap between housing costs and what residents can pay. County officials noted that 60% of housing millage funds remain unspent as projects move forward—commissioners will use the study to inform the 2025 allocations. WKZO
- ➤ Portage Mayor Patricia Randall and Kalamazoo Mayor David Anderson will lead a free three-mile bike tour at Eliason Nature Preserve starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday—this ride begins Bike Week, runs May 10th through the 17th, and will only be canceled if thunder and lightning occur. WKZO
- ➤ The Kalamazoo County board voted to expand the safety zone around the KL Avenue landfill as toxic chemicals spread in the groundwater, and affected homeowners in western Oshtemo Township now receive free city water hookups. Under the new measure, residents are barred from using well water for safety reasons + only Michelle Vanderoest raised concerns at a public hearing about losing the freedom to choose. WKZO
- ➤ Kalamazoo hotel owners approved a fee to add to room charges for a new youth sports complex—75% of ballots cast showed an 82% yes vote—and county officials will soon form a committee to choose the best site from three proposals. This approval comes after local school bonds and a township funding measure failed Tuesday. WKZO
- ➤ Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeff Getting lost a key staff member for paternity cases and handed the work to the state after the board voted 5-to-4 — he said the change lets his office focus on prosecuting felons while board chair Jen Strebs said it protects children — and officials will look for new ways to handle the task.
