  • Local farmers face rising fuel costs and unpredictable weather as spring planting continues. At Husted Farm Market and Little Pistol Farms, higher diesel prices are boosting production costs — a change that may lead to increased crop and service prices.  WWMT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kalamazoo College has selected Karlyn Crowley (provost at Ohio Wesleyan University) as its next president, and she will start on July 1. The college will introduce her to the community on May 18 at 11 a.m. in Stetson Chapel.  MLive
  • High school EMT students from across the state took part in a statewide EMS Skills Challenge at the Radisson Hotel in Kalamazoo on May 7. Fourteen teams competed in written tests and hands-on scenarios, and an awards ceremony was held later at the EMS Expo — Michigan's largest EMS education trade show.  WWMT

  • Bronson Healthcare named Mark Montross as its new vice president and chief administrative officer effective today after serving in an interim role during a six-month redesign of its senior leadership; he brings over 15 years of healthcare experience and will support 700 physicians + advanced practice providers.  WKZO

  • Residents at Wildwood Off Main (292-unit) in Kalamazoo Township learned Thursday, May 7 that the apartment complex was condemned after inspectors found unsafe, decayed structures including rusted steel and cracked supports; many now face the urgent need to find new housing options.  WWMT
  • Demolition of a vacant parking deck on East Lovell + Jasper streets in downtown Kalamazoo began May 6 and is set to last 2½ months, with temporary street closures in place for safety as extreme winter weather sped the structure's decay.  MLive
