  • Milestone Senior Services in Kalamazoo and Calhoun counties struggles with volunteer shortages that strain its Meals on Wheels program, as drivers deliver meals & wellness checks to seniors each weekday morning; rising gas prices add extra cost, so the nonprofit seeks more volunteers to maintain service.  WWMT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kalamazoo-area voters passed five May 5 school proposals including renewing a millage for KRESA funding, approving bonds for Vicksburg and Galesburg-Augusta, levying a new operating millage for Mattawan, and renewing Colon's sinking fund—while a Comstock bond proposal was rejected.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sprinkle Road will close today in Vicksburg for sanitary sewer upgrades — the work will extend from Zylman Avenue to S Avenue and include converting a traffic signal to a four-way stop while northbound traffic follows a posted detour route; the project is expected to last 4 to 6 weeks.  MLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kalamazoo County Health and Community Services Department warns residents that increased tick & mosquito activity has led to a rise in Lyme disease cases, which have tripled in five years. Officials advise wearing light clothing, using repellant with Deet & removing standing water from yards.  WKZO

SPORTS NEWS

  • A week of upsets shifted Kalamazoo-area baseball power rankings as Vicksburg swept Three Rivers and Kalamazoo Christian edged Schoolcraft. Mattawan pitched a no-hitter, Hackett split games, and Centreville won five straight (teams now prepare for key tournament matchups) as the season nears its close.  MLive
  • On Tuesday, May 5, seniors Kylee Killeen and Daisy Jackson each surpassed 200 career hits during a doubleheader sweep over Martin. Jackson had 5 hits and 3 homers and Killeen pitched a 5-inning shutout as Gobles improved to 16-3, setting up a strong run toward the postseason.  MLive
  • Three Rivers softball rewrote local record books — hitting eight homers against Dowagiac last week — and now leads the area power rankings; the Wildcats will play Mattawan next and join the Escanaba Tournament this weekend.  MLive
