- ➤ The Rev. Michael L. Brown is retiring as president and CEO of Kalamazoo Gospel Ministries at the end of this year after 28 years of service—he will serve in an emeritus role until 2027 while the Rev. John Simpson takes over as the new leader in January. MLive
- ➤ Residents at Pavilion Estates still face daily trauma from the tornado that struck on May 7, leaving damaged trailers and without proper siren alerts. Many say that weak support from management and a lack of funding make them fear another storm will bring more harm. MLive
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Police responded after gunfire broke out at Harvey House Bar, 125 W. Water St. in Constantine on May 3 when three patrons were shot and another jumped from a second-story deck—one victim remains in critical condition while a suspect is in custody. MLive
- ➤ A 35-year-old man was arrested in the 900 block of Hazard Street on May 2—officers seized about three ounces of cocaine and cash believed to be drug sale profits—and he now faces felony charges. WKZO
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Kalamazoo nonprofit Speak it Forward will host its Celebration of Success event today at Chenery Auditorium—this free program runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and features spoken word performances by local youth, including a tribute by Kirk Latimer’s son, Ethan, alongside acts by Gabe Giron, DJ Boogie, and Ed Genesis. The event revives a five-year pause following the loss of cofounder Kirk Latimer and aims to inspire youth to share their stories. MLive
