ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Kalamazoo police report a 3-year-old accidentally shot herself in a parked car Saturday night when she accessed her legally owned firearm from the center console; she is in critical but stable condition at a hospital—officials urge gun owners to secure their guns properly to prevent such accidents. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Police reported that two security guards were injured while breaking up a fight at Kalamazoo Central High School track meet on May 2 — about 20 people had gathered and most had left by the time officers arrived. MLive
- ➤ Liborio Rogelio Valdez II, a 29-year-old man, was convicted Friday for manslaughter and armed robbery in connection with the April 4 shooting death of 24-year-old Kavonta Martin at Westchester Woods Apartments—he shot Martin during a robbery resulting in his death—and will be sentenced on June 10. - ➤ Gas prices increased 17¢ per gallon in Michigan, pushing the state average to $3.21 as Triple-A Michigan noted that prices fell 5¢ from last month and are 40¢ lower than last year; counties vary with Kalamazoo averaging $3.28 while Traverse City records $3.02 (Lansing shows the highest at $3.27). - ➤ Kalamazoo County commissioners will hold a public hearing Wednesday night to consider expanding the sanitary district around the KL Avenue landfill as contaminants continue moving northwest. The landfill was used as a trash dump in the 1960s and 1970s before closing in 1979—County Environmental Health director Lucus Pols says the hearing will help safeguard homeowners—since one chemical risk remains.
