COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Kalamazoo Farmer's Market returned for the 2025 season on May 3 with 135 vendors selling fresh food and handmade goods. The market will run every Saturday until October—featuring Tuesday and Thursday events from June 3—and accepts cash, card, and food assistance payments.  WWMT
  • Several streets in Kalamazoo and Portage will close this weekend for the Zeigler Kalamazoo Marathon—the Kids 1K on May 3 affects a small downtown area while races today use a new course that starts and ends at Bronson Park.  MLive

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Repairs at the FedEx facility at 6701 Portage Road in Portage remain underway one year after a May 7, 2024 tornado—some operations have resumed while full capacity is expected only by late summer.  MLive

CRIME NEWS

  • Members of KVET, CRT, DEA — and ATF executed a search warrant in Portage after investigating drug sales and illegal weapon possession, and a 35-year-old man was detained on Lake Street in Kalamazoo without incident while authorities seized methamphetamine, evidence of drug manufacturing, cash, and several firearms including a Tec-9, rifles, a shotgun, and suppressors.  WKZO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A Detroit-based developer proposed a 444-unit mixed-use project on a 48-acre site in Oshtemo Township with work starting late 2025, while Prairie Ronde Township reviewed a plan for 21 condos on April 29. Comstock Township also sent a new food truck ordinance for board approval and the city of Kalamazoo voted to rezone properties to allow mixed-use development.  MLive

  • Shelby, a 3-year-old beagle at the SPCA of Southwest Michigan, is looking for his forever home today and is described as a snuggly lap dog—he is known to be very affectionate with kids and other pets and is expected to weigh over 50 pounds when fully grown.  WWMT

  • Hundreds of kids ran in the PNC Kids' 1k in Kalamazoo on May 3rd as each participant 12 and under earned a t-shirt and finisher medal—this event preceded the Zeigler Kalamazoo Marathon happening today.  WWMT
