COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Kalamazoo is celebrating Bike Month in May with a full calendar of bike-friendly events for all ages that promote active living and sustainable neighborhoods. National Ride a Bike Day will be held on May 4 and two events—Bikes in the Zoo at the Kalamazoo Mall from noon to 4 p.m. and the Mayors’ Ride at the Eliason Nature Reserve at 10 a.m.—are scheduled for May 10.  WKZO

  • Bomba’s BBQ will move to a new brick and mortar location in Kalamazoo Township (2500 Nazareth Road) on May 12 while the current restaurant at 1428 Portage St. stays open until the new space is ready.  MLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • Grammy-nominated Kalamazoo native Ryan Hurd released his second solo album 'Midwest Rock & Roll' on May 2 with longtime partner Aaron Eshuis, and the deluxe version features four extra tracks recorded at Abbey Road — the songs reflect his early music days in Kalamazoo and nod to classic influences like The Beatles.  MLive
  • The Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo on Friday announced Brush the Block, a new mural festival scheduled for September 2-7 that will feature live music and a mural painting demonstration—city officials and local building owners will help mark the festival by adding new art to public walls.  WWMT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kalamazoo Public Schools began investigating a security incident that knocked out email and internet access on Wednesday—systems will not be restored until they are safe. A third-party IT firm is reviewing the outage while schools remain open and teachers are available by phone or in person.  WKZO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On May 2, the city issued a boil-water advisory for residents on Nassau Street between Gertrude and East Main in Kalamazoo Township—this was a precaution during infrastructure repairs that caused a temporary loss of water pressure. Residents were advised to boil tap water for two minutes or use bottled water, and officials expected initial test results within 24 to 48 hours with a full lift anticipated by May 5.  MLive
