GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Portage city council last night added a brownfield designation to the Stanwood Crossings development to lower home prices by capturing future taxes and creating a community land trust—eligible buyers must earn between 80 and 120% of the average median income. City staff said they will soon present plans to choose 12 of the 41 planned homes using federal and state housing grants, a three-million-dollar county millage, and other strategies to offer homes at 75% of the build cost.  WKZO
  • Nonprofit leaders in Kalamazoo warned that federal funding cuts and policy changes have disrupted essential services in housing, legal aid and family assistance (placing vulnerable residents at risk). Thirty-seven local organizations reported that 37,670,900 dollars in federal funds are cut, threatening 717 local jobs and services for 96,775 residents (prompting urgent action from local lawmakers).  WWMT
