CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Kalamazoo driver said that while driving the 19-year-old suspect Lamone Demetrius Hickman Jr. to several stops last week, she heard five gunshots as she passed 21-year-old Perry-Bennett on North Park Street at 10:47 p.m. — Perry-Bennett later died from a gunshot wound and Hickman was charged with open murder. - ➤ A jury returned a verdict on Friday finding Jamyre Cameron Thompson guilty of voluntary manslaughter and felony firearm charges after a bullet ricocheted through an apartment door, killing visitor Mark Jackson during his visit from New Baltimore — sentencing is set for 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 28 — following closing arguments. - ➤ KCSO deputies responded to a home invasion near North Sprinkle Road and North 28th Street at 3:03 a.m. Tuesday and chased a 31-year-old Kalamazoo resident in a stolen vehicle who crashed on M-89 during an attempted U-turn—injuring himself and a deputy before fleeing on foot and later being arrested with stolen mail and outstanding warrants. - ➤ Nineteen-year-old Lamone Hickman Jr. was charged with murder after Marktavion Perry-Bennett was fatally shot just before 11 p.m. near North Park Street and West Patterson Street in Kalamazoo—he was arrested in Muskegon on Friday and is held without bond. WKZO

- ➤ Six international students at Western Michigan University have had their SEVIS statuses reinstated by the federal government after several sued Homeland Security and ICE. Their attorney Adriana Kemish warned them against traveling abroad since leaving may stop their reentry — one student from India, one from China, and one from Nepal are among those affected. WKZO

- ➤ A poll invites Kalamazoo residents to vote for the top junior spring sports athlete among 49 local contenders across baseball, track, soccer, softball, and golf — votes remain open until 9 a.m. on May 5. MLive
- ➤ The Kalamazoo Growlers will have former Detroit Tiger Brandon Inge coach the team on July 10 against the Battle Creek Battle Jacks—he signed a one-day contract and will sign autographs as he brings the 2006 Tigers magic to Homer Stryker Field. WKZO
- ➤ The 46th annual Zeigler Kalamazoo Marathon will run a new course that begins and ends in Bronson Park on Sunday, May 4, with races starting at 7 a.m. Runners will travel through downtown and local neighborhoods (including Bacon Station) while a kids’ 1K is planned on Saturday (May 3 at 10 a.m.).
