COMMUNITY NEWS

  • After 13 years with PFC Grocery & Deli, the Kalamazoo Farmer's Market opens Saturday under new management by Gamsho Group, running Saturdays 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. through November and on Tuesdays and Thursdays from June to October (vendor rates and benefits remain unchanged).  WWMT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Larry Bell, noted for Bell’s Brewery and his love for jazz, gifted $8.8 million to fund the Larry J. Bell Artist Award at The Gilmore—Sullivan Fortner Jr. will perform at the Piano Festival on April 30—and is developing an arts space downtown at the former Food Dance location.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The city is building a new Portland Loo at 108 E. Water St next to an existing unit to serve downtown pedestrians. Construction is underway after winter delays and the facility will open on June 3 at a cost of about $237K, including purchase + installation fees.  MLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • The 47th annual Zeigler Kalamazoo Marathon drew over 5,000 runners to Bronson Park Sunday morning, with athletes competing in races from the marathon to the 5K run/walk plus tens of thousands cheering along city streets.  WWMT
