COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights has helped 7,000 kids from over 70 countries and now seeks volunteers to support unaccompanied immigrant children. The center will host Volunteer Child Advocate training on May 3 and May 4 for locals from Kalamazoo and nearby areas — volunteers fluent in Spanish are especially needed. WWMT
- ➤ The CROP Hunger Walk returns to downtown Kalamazoo on April 27 and will feature check-in at 1 p.m. and kickoff at 2 p.m.—participants from 13 local churches will choose between a 1.25-mile and a 3.1-mile route to help raise $12,000 for hunger programs supported by Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes and Church World Service. - ➤ Kalamazoo police investigated a fatal shooting at the 400 block of North Street outside Green Door Distillery on Saturday, April 12—one person of interest was interviewed and authorities are seeking another individual captured in a video while warning that sharing unverified social media names can endanger innocent people. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The city began several road and infrastructure projects on April 15 such as replacing 1,500 lead service lines in Edison and rehabilitating the Gull Street Bridge with temporary traffic shifts in place. Future work includes starting improvements along Arcadia Creek in June, milling Westnedge Avenue the week of June 9, and replacing water mains on Porter and Knollwood with contracts running through November 1, 2026. - ➤ The City of Kalamazoo announced that public services will begin spring hydrant flushing on April 20 and continue until April 30 to remove sediment from water mains — tap water may appear cloudy until residents run cold water to clear it. Residents with construction or maintenance projects during this period are advised to call 311. WWMT
