- ➤ Factory Coffee will open its fourth location inside the Marriott Kalamazoo Conference Center later this month—taking over a former Starbucks space to serve coffee, cocktails and bagel bombs in three flavors to hotel guests and nearby workers. MLive
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Linda Stermer was found guilty of two counts of murder for killing her husband Todd Stermer in 2007 — the jury deliberated for less than seven hours and she will be sentenced to life in prison without parole. WKZO
- ➤ An 18-year-old woman was shot in a nonfatal incident early Monday morning in Kalamazoo. Officers were dispatched to the 3100 block of South Westnedge Avenue — they say the shooting is not connected to Saturday’s fatal shooting. MLive
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Local officials in Kalamazoo are preparing for possible budget cuts by forming an intergovernmental round table that meets monthly to coordinate responses—today the county board will consider granting Chair Strebs authority to sign when federal or state funding is threatened. Deputy Administrator Lyndi Smith said an $18.9 million EPA grant is already at risk—its response deadline was missed due to the board's biweekly meeting schedule. WKZO
- ➤ Today is the tax filing deadline, and county Treasurer Thomas Whitener said that 44 properties were seized for unpaid property taxes but only three owner-occupied homes now face foreclosure because their owners did not reply to 26 notices—sent by mail and posted. Many homeowners avoided foreclosure by setting up payment plans or meeting hardship needs with funds from the county and city. WKZO
