COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Kalamazoo will break ground today at 1:30 p.m. on The Kalrecovery Project, a 48 unit affordable housing development for recovering substance abusers and their families at 1900 Belford Street. The project took 8 years to plan with funding from federal, state, city and county sources.  WKZO
  • Kalamazoo Habitat for Humanity is hosting Women Build in May to empower women and boost affordable housing. Teams can join build days and fundraising events to support local families.  WKZO

CULTURE NEWS

  • MLive Media Group photographers won 37 awards at the Michigan Press Photographers Association event on Saturday, April 11 at Wayne State University in Detroit — Flint-based Jake May led with 12 wins while Kalamazoo photojournalist Devin Anderson-Torrez earned notable acclaim in the sports portfolio.  MLive

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Michigan rose 11¢ from last week to $3.98 per gallon on Monday, with Flint at $3.88 and Benton Harbor at $4.11. AAA Michigan said prices fell 10¢ from Wednesday's record high.  WKZO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kalamazoo Public Schools superintendent Darrin Slade says year-end meetings will start today at Hillside Middle School at 4:30 p.m. for parents+teachers from the high school, followed by a session at King-Westwood Elementary at 6 p.m., with additional meetings on April 20, May 4 and May 13.  WKZO
  • Michigan is expanding its PreK for All program to include home-based providers in Kalamazoo County, offering free early learning for four-year-olds and fresh opportunities for small child care businesses today as Southwest Child Care Resource and Referral leads the pilot initiative.  WKZO
  • Kalamazoo Public Schools is using Magic School AI to teach pupils how to chat with book characters and historical figures for a personalized learning experience. The district also hosted seminars (Parenting in the Digital World) to help parents learn safe digital habits.  WWMT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Heavy rain is forecast every day this week, raising flood risk in Kalamazoo due to aging storm drains and the city’s valley setting. Local officials will begin cleaning catch basins this summer and pilot an Adopt-a-Drain program as the Army Corps of Engineers starts studies—pending federal funding—to fix drainage issues.  WKZO

  • Microsoft seeks rezoning to build a 104-acre AI data center in Gaines Township with a public hearing set Wednesday, April 15 at 6 p.m. at South Christian High School auditorium in Byron Center; Consumers Energy’s analysis suggests the project could lower residential bills.  WWMT

  • Kalamazoo-area spring sports fans can vote on the first Athlete of the Week poll from April 6 to 11 (40 contenders) before voting closes at 9 a.m. Friday, April 17. Residents can also nominate future athletes by emailing MLive sports reporter Matthew Ehler.  MLive
  • Ten Kalamazoo-area boys basketball players earned AP all-state honors for the 2025-26 season after evaluations by 14 sportswriters. The selections highlight top performers from Kalamazoo Central, Portage Northern, Schoolcraft, White Pigeon, Kalamazoo Phoenix and Mendon.  MLive
  • Four local high school football teams are switching divisions for next season; Portage Central moves to Division 1 after an undefeated season while Centreville shifts to Division 7, Gobles transitions to 8-man football and Marcellus moves to Division 2.  MLive
