COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Volunteers cleaned up litter and invasive plants from Verburg and Mayors' Riverfront parks for the Kalamazoo Riverside Parks Beautification Project, which ran Saturday and Sunday. The project (a collaboration among Michigan Waterways Stewards, Kalamazoo Parks and Recreation, and local agencies) will next hold an Adopt A Tree program in the fall.  WWMT

CRIME NEWS

  • At about 10:58 p.m. Saturday night, officers arrived on East North Street where 200 to 250 people had gathered outside a business and found a 27-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the chest who was pronounced dead at about 11:39 p.m. as several agencies worked together to secure the scene and KDPS asks anyone with information to call its tip line.  WKZO

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Local leaders and residents are debating a new housing plan after developments on Rose and Wall Streets on April 10 sparked discussions about building more small homes on small lots. Developer Matt Watts proposed a similar plan in Comstock Township last year to address the affordable housing shortage—though some locals worry it may lead to slum-like conditions.  MLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • Western Michigan University won its first NCAA men’s hockey title with a 6—2 win over Boston University on Saturday night. The team held a welcome back event on Sunday and will have a Championship Rally today at 6:00 p.m. at University Arena.  WKZO
  • After defeating the Boston University Terriers 6-2 in the Frozen Four title game on April 13th, the Broncos—earning their first national championship—returned home where fans cheered as they got off the bus at Lawson Arena on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.  WWMT
  • Western Michigan University hockey defeated Boston University 6—2 on April 12 to win its first NCAA title in any sport since 1965, sparking celebrations in both St. Louis and Kalamazoo. Local fans gathered at Read Fieldhouse and Fraternity Village Drive, and one group even ignited a burning couch to mark the win.  MLive
