- ➤ Four international students at WMU had their SEVIS statuses terminated without notice by federal officials—one already lost their visa on April 9. WMU staff discovered the changes last week and are now helping the students figure out their next steps before they might be forced to leave the country. MLive
- ➤ Former Township Fire Chief David Obreiter lost his legal battle against Kalamazoo Township and officials over allegations of undue influence in his 2022 termination — he had claimed his firing was based on bias and unfounded presumptions. MLive
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Gilmore Community Healing Centers in Kalamazoo received $4 million in federal funds and now faces possible service cuts that may lead to layoffs and longer wait times—clinical director Tawanda Clarke said the center is in a wait-and-see mode as it prepares for uncertain changes. WWMT
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ High school basketball fans in Kalamazoo named Schoolcraft all-state senior Tucker Walther as Boys Hoops Player of the Year after voting in a local poll last week. Walther, who played at Parchment High School on Feb. 7, stood out among other top players in the area. MLive
- ➤ WMU’s men’s hockey coach Pat Ferschweiler was named the Division I Men’s Ice Hockey CCM/AHCA Coach of the Year after his team won the NCHC title and earned their first Frozen Four berth with key double-overtime wins against Minnesota State, UMass, and Denver. He is the only coach to win his conference coach award and reach the NCAA semifinals—an honor that marks a first for both him and WMU. WKZO
