CRIME NEWS
- ➤ After seven days of testimony and 30 witnesses, Linda Stermer’s retrial ended Tuesday as her three sons testified that she instructed them to lie to an insurance agent about a 2007 fire that killed their father—Stermer, now 60 and out on appeal since 2018, now faces new charges for murder and arson—and the prosecution rested. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Parchment School District will ask voters to approve a $36.4 million bond on May 6 to pay for needed upgrades to aging school facilities—plans include roof replacements, air conditioning installation and new secure vestibules. District officials said the bond will cover essential work that the current budget cannot support. MLive
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The EPA is starting a cleanup of soil and sediment contaminated by PCBs at Trowbridge Dam along the Kalamazoo River in Allegan. NCR Voyix is working with the Michigan DNR and EGLE using a dredging barge to pump sediments for processing and to build a temporary structure to control river levels; cleanup will last about three years with continued air and water monitoring. - ➤ Kalamazoo officials are seeking county permission to improve the Northside State Ditch Drain — which may be widened, branched, or cleaned out — to lessen flooding in yards and basements while the project is estimated to cost about $310,000 with the city paying 35% of the expense. MLive
