COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The historic Ecumenical Senior Center, once a drugstore involved in a Civil Rights protest, will be torn down in May to make way for a new building with four times the space at 702 N. Burdick St. Its staff and programs have moved to Milestone Senior Services, and construction will start soon with the new center set to open fall 2026 — it will offer expanded services for seniors in Kalamazoo.  MLive

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A blaze in the woodshop at Portage Central High School was contained by its fire suppression system Saturday night—firefighters and EMS limited further damage near South Westendge and East Centre Avenue as they managed smoke and water for about two hours while the cause remained under investigation.  WKZO
  • Firefighters in Portage fought an overnight fire at Portage Central High School when a wood shop caught fire on Saturday, April 5 at 10:40 p.m. and they spent over two hours ventilating the building and removing smoke and water—officials said the fire is not believed to be suspicious and it remains unclear if classes will be affected.  MLive
