ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Police identified Dominick Michael Yadloczky as the jogger who was killed in a crash on Sprinkle Road on March 26 at about 10:10 p.m.—the incident occurred in the 4200 block between East Kilgore and Covington roads and led to several hours of road closure for investigation. MLive
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Yoba Poke Ramen and Bubble Tea opened last July at Drake and West Main — offering eight ramen dishes, custom poke bowls and bubble tea. Owner Ling Wu, who ran China 1 in Vicksburg, said her husband prepares the fresh broths and teas and that business is picking up. MLive
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Shawna Kroeger pled guilty to second-degree murder and second-degree arson — charges stemming from the death of James Travis in a house fire on June 18th, 2022 — and she will serve 18 to 30 years while co-defendant Andrew McCormack awaits trial. WKZO
- ➤ A Kalamazoo woman pleaded guilty to felony murder and second-degree arson for killing 53-year-old James Travis after he was stabbed at his Shakespeare Avenue home on June 18th following an argument with Andrew John McCormack—she received a sentence of 30 to 50 years while McCormack remains in custody awaiting trial. - ➤ A Kalamazoo Township police officer was shot in the leg and remains stable while a 23-year-old suspect from Portage is in critical condition after officers responded to an assault near Kendall Street late Thursday morning—the suspect fled after assaulting his girlfriend and exchanged gunfire with officers. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On March 26 and 27, 1,200 Kalamazoo high school freshmen visited WMU as part of the renewed Bronco Buds program—experiencing college life in the Read Fieldhouse on W. Michigan Ave—and joined tours, speeches and workshops to learn about college pathways. The program helped the students see what college life can offer and set them on a path toward further education. - ➤ WMU’s new master plan approved on Feb. 6 calls for demolishing 11 buildings and building 4 new ones, including a multicultural center and student health center to attract new students. The plan divides the campus into districts and sets a course for a new downtown event center that will eventually move the hockey program from Lawson Ice Arena — state funds and final approvals are still needed. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Kalamazoo County Government is accepting proposals from qualified agencies to operate an 80-room transitional family shelter at the former Country Inn and Suites on Kilgore Service Road — the shelter will offer housing-focused case management services starting this summer. Proposals must be submitted online by April 21 at 10 a.m. and the contract, scheduled to begin July 1, runs through June 30 with a possible two-year extension. WWMT
