COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Sinclair and Disabled American Veterans partnered to support local veterans through Veterans Helping Veterans, a nonprofit offering donated furniture, household items, and essential services from a warehouse in Kalamazoo. Larry Bales said the effort has aided more than 3,700 veterans, providing on average about $2,000 in support each.  WWMT
  • Residents packed the Richland Township meeting Tuesday night to debate the Liberty Farms Solar project by Consumers Energy, a proposal that may use 2,200 acres to produce enough power for 52,000 homes — township leaders said no final decision has been made and the public hearing will continue.  WWMT

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire broke out on March 9 at Kalamazoo Metal Recyclers at 1525 Lake St., starting in an exterior pile and burning for eight hours as crews used over 1 million gallons of water to put it out; investigators have not determined the cause amid many potential ignition sources.  MLive

BUSINESS NEWS

  • DTE Energy has proposed a one-gigawatt data center project with Google in Van Buren Township (part of Project Cannoli) that includes commitments to renewable energy and energy efficiency. The Michigan Public Service Commission will review the contract for nearly six months to address power rate concerns.  MLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Kalamazoo County board recommended a mural design by former street artist Patrick Harshberger for the new parking ramp near the county courthouse and administration building. The design was chosen from 29 proposals by a local committee, with final approval and contracting coming later.  WKZO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Comstock Public Schools Board of Education issued its third censure of Trustee Dr. Richard Hathaway after a closed session raised concerns about his adherence to communication protocols and board responsibilities. On March 9, a 5-1 vote removed him from nearly all committees (leaving questions about his future role).  WWMT
  • More than 70 resident physicians and six fellows will begin training in July at WMU Homer Stryker School of Medicine in Kalamazoo + Battle Creek. The group includes four MIDOC participants who will receive student loan repayment for serving underserved areas from a pool of 53,373 applicants.  WKZO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kalamazoo Township is planning a new 45-million community complex on Douglas Avenue near West Mosel Avenue including township offices, 108-seat board chambers, and a police station; it will open before the 2028 election and replace the current Old Riverview Drive facility.  WKZO

HEALTH NEWS

  • Beacon Kalamazoo unveiled a $3.5-million upgrade to its emergency room that added four exam rooms and a dual-pathway care model (in effect for about a month) to speed up triage. Officials said the improvements helped patients be seen faster.  WKZO

  • The Portage Central High School boys varsity swim team was honored by city council when they declared March 14 as Portage Central Swim and Dive Day in recognition of their second SMAAC Conference title and historic 4th place state finish + Coach Michelle Greene highlighted the team's two-year undefeated streak.  WKZO
  • Growlers announced safety netting and seating upgrades for the ballpark before the season begins Monday, May 25. The ballpark will add 178 feet of netting on left field and 260 feet on right field and install new chairs (366 in sections 100-104 and 244 in sections 200-204) to protect fans.  WWMT
