  • On Friday and Saturday, Wedel's held its 30th annual Spring Garden Show in its biggest heated greenhouse, where people could enter for free, attend 23 gardening talks, and win door prizes—extra passes were sold for the talks. This family-owned center is known for its wide range of plants and outdoor living services.  WWMT
  • Around 150 participants joined the annual Walk to End Homelessness event on Saturday in Kalamazoo to raise funds for local programs helping people experiencing homelessness. Housing Resources Inc.—the event sponsor—has raised $48,003.95 of its $110,000 goal and is accepting donations until March 31.  WWMT

CRIME NEWS

  • A man was arrested Saturday morning for allegedly breaking into and setting fire at Happy’s Pizza — located at 1517 S. Westnedge Ave. in Kalamazoo — when police were called at 11 a.m. on March 22.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kalamazoo Public Schools will send seventh graders to Kalamazoo Valley Community College and ninth graders to Western Michigan University from March 24-27 to experience campus life and learn about the transition from high school to college. Students will interact with college students, faculty, and admissions staff in a program—an expansion of pre-pandemic initiatives aimed at guiding their academic futures.  WKZO

HEALTH NEWS

  • Over 250 uninsured Kalamazoo residents received free dental care on Saturday, March 22 at the Family Health Center's Alcott campus — the Dr. Lisandra Soto Dental Day of Caring offered exams, cleanings, fillings and extractions from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The event honored Dr. Soto who founded the program in 2019 and demonstrated FHC's ongoing commitment to affordable oral health care.  WWMT
