CRIME NEWS

  • On March 16, a woman reported gunshots were fired when she shined a light into a wooded area near her Cooper Township home—she was not injured—and police say the incident appears isolated.  MLive
  • A woman outside her Cooper Township home had shots fired at her early Tuesday morning on March 18 and was unharmed even though several vehicles were struck—Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office is gathering evidence as they investigate the incident.  WWMT

CULTURE NEWS

  • A new Broadway series will bring a mix of classic and contemporary shows to Miller Auditorium at Western Michigan University, starting with Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas! on November 7—8 and continuing with Chicago!—the longest running Broadway musical—on January 20—21, Clue on February 4—5, Tina — The Tina Turner Musical on March 3—4, and Beetlejuice on May 8—10; subscriptions open June 3.  MLive

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Advocates led by Jane Ghosh of Discover Kalamazoo propose a $40M youth sports complex in Kalamazoo County to provide a state-of-the-art venue for youth basketball and volleyball and boost local hotel and restaurant revenue. The 120,000 to 150,000 square foot facility will open in 2027 if local hotels approve a 4% incremental lodging assessment+ it is expected to generate significant economic impact.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials announced that Kalamazoo Parks will apply for $500,000 in Land and Water Conservation Fund grants and seek $150,000 in Recreation Passport funds to upgrade Milham Park. The planned projects include renovating parking lots on Kilgore Road and Lovers Lane, modernizing trails, adding wooden deck overlooks, and building a new ADA compliant shelter and tables—if approved, work will begin in 2026.  WKZO
  • Orange barrels on Kalamazoo Avenue show lane closures that will last only a few days—Consumers Gas is installing a new gas line between Greenwich Place and Douglas Avenue in the Stuart neighborhood.  MLive
  • Kalamazoo city commissioners have begun the search for a new city manager to replace Jim Ritsema, who retires this fall. They formed a work group to review proposals such as using a national recruiting firm or the in-house HR department—and will discuss next steps at their upcoming meeting.  WKZO
  • The City of Kalamazoo submitted grant applications to the Michigan DNR for improvements at Milham Park and committed local funds for either a Land and Water Conservation Fund or a Trust Fund grant—if approved, construction will begin in 2026 to renovate parking lots, trails and other park features.  WWMT

  • WMU women's basketball head coach Shane Clipfell retired after 13 seasons and became the winning coach with the most wins in the program. WMU officials said a national search for a new head coach will begin soon.  WKZO
