COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Princeton Park in Kalamazoo’s Northside Neighborhood is set for a woodland-themed upgrade as landscaping work begins in summer or early fall 2025. The 0.18-acre park, which currently has a play structure and two swings, will receive new improvements + updated outdoor features.  MLive

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety crews controlled a fire at a home on the 900 block of Southworth Terrace at about 9 p.m. Wednesday after flames destroyed a gazebo and a stairwell—no one was hurt.  WKZO

CRIME NEWS

  • Ashley Schippers, a Portage resident and former treasurer for Vicksburg Rocket Football, was ordered to pay over $33,000 in restitution—she embezzled funds from a youth football organization—and received 2 years, 6 months probation after her sentencing by Judge Paul Bridenstine on March 10, 2025 in Kalamazoo County Circuit Court.  MLive
  • A 45-year-old man was stabbed at Saddlebrook Farms Manufactured Homes in Texas Township yesterday afternoon and taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries—police arrested a 36-year-old woman who now awaits arraignment in jail.  WKZO
  • A Kalamazoo man—Tieshawn Labar Matthews—was found guilty of first degree murder and felony firearm charges for the July 8, 2023 shooting death of 17-year-old Coreleon Antonio Gordon, with sentencing scheduled for April 21, 2025.  WKZO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kalamazoo Public Schools reported a 9.4% rise in graduation rates and a 20 percentage point jump for African American male students—numbers verified by the state and confirmed by Superintendent Darrin Slade. He said every high school showed improvement and the district plans to boost graduation, attendance and test scores further.  WKZO
