COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Chaplains from the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team are being deployed to Three Rivers after Friday's tornadoes killed four people and left many without power – they aim to provide emotional and spiritual care as damage assessments continue.  WWMT
  • Steve Walsh leads the Vine Neighborhood Association in rebranding his diverse area as he promotes local community events & supports small businesses amid rising home prices that threaten its blue-collar roots, working to dispel negative labels and build unity through local initiatives.  MLive
  • Since Friday, the American Red Cross in Kalamazoo helped disaster recovery across St. Joseph, Cass, and Branch counties after deadly tornadoes struck. Its Riverside Church shelter closed today at 6:00 p.m. while volunteers distributed supplies in Union City (rakes, tarps, shovels, gloves, snacks, and water).  WKZO

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Officials are still assessing damage from Friday’s tornado near Edwardsburg, which caused five fatalities and damage to 70+ buildings across affected counties as crews continue cleanup efforts.  MLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • Downtown festivals return at Arcadia Creek Festival Place this summer as Kalamazoo Pride (June 5-6), the Caribbean Festival (June 26-27), the Kalamazoo Valley Blues Festival (July 10-11), and Canadiana Fest (Sept. 19) proceed before planned renovations begin after Labor Day, with a 2027 reopening scheduled.  WKZO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kalamazoo Public Schools will expand their summer reading program this summer to now serve all elementary students by providing books, a family interaction guide, workbook + journal to support reading. The board approved spending over $100,000 to give each student a drawstring bag for their home library.  WKZO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Howard Street between West Crosstown Parkway and Oakland Drive is closed for water utility repair; drivers must follow the detour — via Bronson Boulevard and Whites Road — until repairs finish on March 16.  WWMT
  • Portage City Council will begin phase two of the Stanwood Crossings project tonight with plans to build 12 additional workforce homes priced between $300,000 and $360,000 to support local professionals + Kalamazoo County is considering a 3-year pilot housing voucher program later this year.  WKZO

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • WMU will repurchase the 62,000 sqft Newell Rubbermaid building (sold in 2013) at Western Business Technology Park 1.0 for $6 million pending board approval at a special meeting Tuesday, with closing planned in early April. The facility will house campus maintenance and design teams and support soccer parking on game days.  WKZO
