COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A feasibility study released Monday, Mar. 2 recommends building a three-sheet ice complex and a dedicated curling facility to address local ice shortages after closures at Wings Event Center and Lawson Ice Arena. Local sports groups, including the Kalamazoo Curling Club, are pressing for funding to keep ice sports accessible for tournaments and community play.  MLive
  • The SPCA of Southwest Michigan is urging locals to adopt one of the 80+ dogs as the shelter nears capacity in Kalamazoo. The shelter is open Monday through Friday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.  WWMT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • 7 Brew will open two drive-thru stands in Comstock Township and Kalamazoo this spring. One will open around Memorial Day at 5806 Gull Road — the other is set for July near Chick-fil-A on West Main Street, and each will hire 60 to 70 workers.  MLive

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Pharmaceutical manufacturer Perrigo will lay off about 7% of its workforce over the next two years to remain competitive. The move will affect employees at its North American headquarters in Allegan.  WKZO

  • Kalamazoo College assistant professor James Denison will compete on Jeopardy! tomorrow, March 6 at 7:30 p.m. at the KIA auditorium—314 S. Park St—during the Kirk Newman Art School Hands-On Event that starts at 6 p.m.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Landing Place transitional shelter for homeless families on Kilgore Road will open on April 30 at 11 a.m. in Kalamazoo County and will serve up to 80 families; county housing director Mary Balkema said staff hiring is set to begin soon.  WKZO
  • A government project to convert the former Country Inn & Suites hotel at 1912 E. Kilgore Service Rd. into an emergency homeless shelter has added $33,321 for mold removal and will open on April 1 with 80 units for families.  MLive
  • Attorney General Dana Nessel reissued an alert warning Kalamazoo residents about scammers using AI for deepfakes and voice imitation as part of her National Consumer Protection Week efforts. Residents are urged to verify caller identities using a shared family code and avoid rushing to send money.  WWMT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kalamazoo County recorded its lowest Black infant mortality rate since 1980 with 7 deaths per 1,000 births using data from 2022-2024. Cradle Kalamazoo and local health officials applaud the progress but note that Black infants still face 2.5 times the risk of white infants & continue to urge expanded care.  MLive

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Harvey's On The Mall, a longtime downtown restaurant, closed last September and demolition began yesterday. New owners Dan and Holly Carmichael, who purchased the State Theatre, plan to transform the property into a vibrant downtown space + more details to come.  WWMT
  • Harvey’s on the Mall was demolished starting March 4 — the bar closed in Sept. 2025 and was sold to Lead Balloon Productions, whose owners plan to develop the downtown property and reveal their concept later this year.  MLive
