EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Kalamazoo Public Schools is holding kindergarten and PEEP orientation on Wednesday, Mar. 4 at 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. at all 17 elementary schools; families may register, meet staff & tour schools as online enrollment for the 2026‑27 school year opens that day. WKZO
- ➤ The Portage Public Schools board approved a $2 million purchase of 14.79 acres at 5201 Angling Road to build a new elementary with an open-concept design & construction will begin next year while classes continue at the current school until the facility opens in 2029. WKZO
- ➤ The Climax-Scotts Board of Education voted Tuesday night not to renew Tyler Langs as athletic director and head football coach after a third-party investigation found his combined roles raised favoritism concerns + Langs remains as dean of students while a search will be posted for separate candidates. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Thousands of pounds of plastic pellets spilled near Saugatuck along I-196 nearly a month ago, prompting EGLE to oversee cleanup in Allegan County while confirming no known health risk. A cleanup contractor working with MDOT aims to remove the microplastics (used in manufacturing) amid ongoing efforts to minimize environmental impact. WWMT
- ➤ Holloo Farms, a dairy CAFO in Calhoun County, will pay a $32,907 civil fine for discharging raw manure into Huckleberry Drain in 2019, and it must submit quarterly groundwater reports for one year (the farm had invested in upgrades before the settlement). WWMT
