  • Portage resident Max Grodi saved a 6-week-old pitbull puppy (nicknamed Moose) thrown from a moving car on Sprinkle Road Sunday, Feb. 8 by pulling over and warming it up in her car.  WWMT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Dabney & Co. opened in 2022 to honor Kalamazoo’s legacy of Black-owned bars that started in 1946. The cocktail bar features live blues, family-inspired recipes, and pays tribute to pioneering mixologists to create a welcoming space for community unity.  WWMT

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Michigan dropped by seven cents today to an average of $2.83, with Kalamazoo County averaging $2.80 — Ann Arbor is highest at $2.95 while Traverse City is lowest at $2.52.  WKZO
  • Jonas Peterson, CEO of Southwest Michigan First, said challenges in affordability and population growth may slow prosperity despite a record $9.5 billion in capital investment over the past three years. He urged local leaders to work together to boost growth & secure jobs for the region.  MLive

  • Officials say a boil water advisory covers Arthur Avenue (between East Main and Dearborn) after a water main break over the weekend; residents must boil water for two minutes before cooking or drinking while it is safe for bathing (lift expected by Wednesday).  WKZO
  • Fayette Township hired the Portage law firm Bauckham, Thall, Seeber, Kaufman and Koches PC on Monday, Feb. 9 to advise on zoning matters amid opposition to a proposed solar farm near Jonesville. The board acted after residents asked for independent counsel to ensure local control over development.  MLive
  • Federal officials warn taxpayers to ignore scam texts and emails claiming refund approval while tax season begins, and they advise checking refund statuses through official IRS mail only — reporting suspicious messages to 7726 to help prevent identity theft.   WWMT
