  • Indiana Michigan Power announced Friday that it will suspend power disconnections for non-payment for its 129,000 Southwest Michigan customers until at least Friday, Jan. 30 + the company will review weather forecasts on Jan. 31 for next steps.  MLive

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Essential workers at Consumers Energy and Ambati Flowers continue their duties across West Michigan despite freezing conditions, relying on safety measures + rotating shifts to limit cold exposure. They work in extreme weather to keep services running and deliveries on schedule.  WWMT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Wind chills have dropped to -30 degrees in parts of West Michigan today with 20-25 mph gusts and risks for frostbite + hypothermia for people and pets. Lighter winds and clear skies tonight may let temperatures fall further by Saturday morning, prompting caution for outdoor exposure.  WWMT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local libraries, churches and community centers are serving as warming centers on Friday and Saturday to help residents face dangerously cold temperatures. Metro Transit provides free rides (riders must request transit to a center) until Saturday night.  MLive

  • Beacon Health warns residents that although snow is winding down, bitter cold will persist today and Saturday. Infants, elderly (and those with chronic conditions) should limit time outdoors to avoid frostbite and hypothermia.  WWMT

  • The county approved $2 million for the B on Burdick apartment complex – an 85-unit project with 20 apartments reserved for hospital staff and three commercial spaces – which will start construction this summer at 802 S. Burdick St. near Bronson Methodist Hospital.  MLive
  • Data from Redfin shows that 30 Kalamazoo County homes sold for over $1 million last year — three top-priced properties on Gull Lake include a $4.5 million home in Hickory Corners sold on June 27.  MLive
