COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Family Promise of Southwest Michigan has named Andrea Tramel as its executive director — she will operate The Landing Place, a transitional shelter for unhoused families in the former Country Inn and Suites near the airport. The facility is set to open in April.  WKZO

CULTURE NEWS

  • Wynton Marsalis will perform with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra on Feb. 1 at Miller Auditorium while Pastor Millard Southern III brings him to Kalamazoo to address declining arts funding in school curriculums with a talk scheduled for the following day.  WKZO

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Triple-A Michigan reported gas prices increased by 11¢ per gallon, raising the statewide average to $2.81. In Kalamazoo, pumps are expected to charge about $2.88 while prices range from $2.66 in Traverse City to $2.91 in Ann Arbor.  WKZO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Monday night, the Climax-Scotts school board meeting saw a divided crowd voice support and concerns about administrator and head coach Tyler Langs amid an ongoing investigation; officials confirmed he remains on non-disciplinary paid administrative leave—decision on his employment status may come later.  WWMT
  • Since the 2005-06 school year, The Kalamazoo Promise has funded $242.5M in tuition for thousands of KPS graduates, with Western Michigan University receiving the largest share and Kalamazoo Valley Community College enrolling the most scholars. About 80% of the funds have gone to public universities while students have 10 years to use their award.  MLive
  • After a Jan. 8 board meeting approved nearly $6 million in renovations, Loy Norrix at 606 E. Kilgore will get a roof replacement and interior updates while Phoenix at 1411 Oakland Drive will see a new secure vestibule and flooring upgrades; work is set to begin this summer.  MLive

  • Lisa and Jeff Vander Ploeg launched Seniors Helping Seniors on Oct. 1 to help local elders stay in their homes. The new franchise in Kalamazoo County hires experienced caregivers to provide companionship and personal care.  MLive
  • Bronson Healthcare will invest $15 million to expand Lakeview Hospital's emergency room in Paw Paw by adding a new patient entrance, ambulance bay, and staff spaces—filing a certificate of need soon with construction expected to start by mid-2026 and complete in late 2027.  MLive
