ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • MLive’s documentary examines how paper mill odors are causing breathing problems for residents with asthma in Kalamazoo’s historically Black Northside neighborhood (highlighting environmental health concerns) as calls for cleaner air grow.  MLive
  • In 2025, West Michigan faced active weather as March 30 storms produced 14 tornadoes and widespread outages plus a summer drought and heavy November snowfall affected communities while bright northern lights shone in September and November plus unexpected rains relieved drought conditions.  WWMT
  • City staff responded to a sewer overflow at a manhole on Sunnock Avenue on Tuesday, removing a blockage (at 2:41 p.m.) and remediating the area after roughly 300 gallons spilled into the storm sewer system; officials said they notified the Michigan Department of Environmental, Great Lakes and Energy and county environmental unit as required.  WWMT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kalamazoo City Commission approved two housing initiatives on Dec. 15 to address recovery needs, including a 48-unit development at 333 E. Alcott St + five Neighborhood Enterprise Zone Homestead applications in the Vine neighborhood. The projects will begin in 2026 and support affordable housing for families in recovery.  WWMT
